Maintain Material BOM Item and Resource Consumption Rules

Purpose

Maintain Resource BOM Item usage for Materials.

Prerequisites

Resources and Materials that serve as BOM Items are already created. The Materials that use the Resource(s) and/or BOM Items are already created. See Maintain Resources for more information on creating and maintaining Resources. See Maintain Materials for more information on creating and maintaining Materials.

Steps

Material BOM Item or Resource Consumption Rules can be created or maintained manually or using Phenix’s Import functionalities Consumption Rules: BOM Items and Consumption Rules: Resources. This article covers the manual method. To learn about Phenix’s import option, see the How-To article Import Data.

  1. Click on the menu path Setup > Materials.

Screenshot of Phenix's left-side menu Setup section, with Materials link highlighted.
  2. Find the Material whose Consumption Rules you wish to edit. Click on the Material’s entry to go to its details page.

  3. Scroll down, and you will find two headers: BOM Items and Consumption Rules and Resource Consumption Rules.

BOM Item Consumption

BOM Items and Consumption Rules

BOM items and consumption rate rules allow you to track and report the cumulative consumption of critical components and intermediates. They are also used to create dependent requirements and eventually production orders for intermediates in the multi-level planning and scheduling.

  1. To create a new BOM Consumption Rule, click Create Rule.

  2. To export all BOM Items and Resources, click the Export button.

  3. To edit a consumption rule, click Edit under the right “Actions” column.

    1. For more information on the data entries when creating or editing a BOM Item Consumption Rule, see BOM Consumption Rule Data Definitions below.

  4. To delete a consumption rule, click under the right “Actions” column.

BOM Consumption Rule Data Definitions

  • Component Item Number: The numbering under the # column of the BOM Items table. Used to order BOM Item and Resource components of Materials so that the same Component Item Number is the same type of BOM Item or Resource for all Materials. This allows for easy viewing of BOM Item and Resource Consumption on the schedule.

    • Example: If all Materials are frozen meals and have a sauce BOM Item, a pasta BOM Item, and use the Resource Staff, then you can set the sauce to Component Item 1, pasta to Component Item 2, and Staff to Component Item 3.

  • Material Being Consumed: The Material ID of the material being consumed.

  • Consumption Type: One of two options: By Produced Amount (default) and Constant Rate. Entries vary depending on type selected; see below for definitions of these entries.

  • Line: If the consumption rule applies on a specific line, enter the Line ID here.

  • Line Filter: A filter to apply the consumption rule only to lines matching the criteria. See Phenix Filtering Syntax for more information.

If Consumption Type is By Produced Amount:

  • Consumed Quantity: Amount of the Consumed Material used. Enter the value and then select the unit.

  • Produced Quantity: Amount of the Material that will be produced.

If Consumption Type is Constant Rate:

  • Rate per Minute: The consumed quantity per one minute of production. Enter the value and then select the unit.

Resource Consumption

Resource Consumption Rules

Resource consumption rules allow you to track and report the cumulative use of critical components. They also allow you to view, on the schedule, now much of a Resource is in use at ant given time, and alerts you if the use of a limited Resource exceeds allowed levels. For more information on Resources themselves, see Maintain Resources.

  1. To create a new Resource Consumption Rule, click Create Rule.

  2. To export all BOM Items and Resources, click the Export button.

  3. To edit a consumption rule, click Edit under the right “Actions” column.

    1. For more information on the data entries when creating or editing a Resource Consumption Rule, see Resource Consumption Rule Data Definitions below.

  4. To delete a consumption rule, click under the right “Actions” column.

If Consumption Type is Constant Rate:

  • Rate per Minute: The amount of the Resource needed per one minute of production. Enter the value and then select the unit.

If Consumption Type is By Produced Amount:

  • Consumed Quantity: Amount of the Resource used. Enter the value and then select the unit of the Resource.

  • Produced Quantity: Amount of the Material that will be produced.
